Human Electric Hybrid

Written by The Naib

the TWIKE an electric human hybrid vehicleI love to ride my bike. There is nothing better than going out for a nice long ride. The wind in your hair, the pedals moving under your own power. The bicycle is one of the most elegant and useful inventions humans have ever come up with. Think about all the wonderful things about a bike. They keep you healthy, they don’t pollute, they let you enjoy nature, they look cool, they are made of metal and brawn.

Now lets say someone invented a bicycle that had a trunk, could seat two, and could go 55 mph, got the equivalent of 300-600 mpg (without burning any gas) and all the same benefits of a normal bike. Enter the TWIKE! This bad boy is amazing. Its a human electric hybrid vehicle.

Free Will?

Written by The Naib

question mark with bandage on its head and a bottle of beerMany a time I have found myself stuck with the simple question of “do we have free will?” If you ponder it hard enough (and know enough chemistry/physics/biology/philosophy) it can be a rather hard, even impossible question to answer. For many years I was in the category of “yes we have free will” and as the years have gone by this wall of free will seems to have been slowly eroded. I am not really sure anymore just how “free” our free will is.

The basic argument comes down to the brain. Is the brain simply a machine like any other, reacting blinding (although in a fascinatingly complex manner) to stimuli. Have we been put together by millions of years of natural selection and really only suffer under the illusion of free will. I choose X and not Y because my brain is set up in such a way that I was always going to choose X. Or are we able to truly take in all stimulus from our environment and then make a choice? I choose X and not Y because I want to. Is there any difference?

Sweet Notes Of Change Update 3

Written by dew

palestine and isreal mapHi everyone that is following my blog. Today is my last day in Ramallah, hard to believe. It has been an incredible experience meeting all these musicians that come here to teach. Yes, things have been very tense depending on the city and daily circumstances, but life is continuing. Stores and shops still open.

Children go to school. However, they have no where near the security or comfort of freedom that I have had in living in the US. The concerts have been performed in churches, and because of this, I have felt like I have been viewing the many cities here from the eye of a hurricane. Inside the church and on its grounds, I have experienced a calmness wash away my unease at being surrounded by more than one foreign language.

Vietnam The Second?

Written by The Naib

In a stunningly stupid move Bush has decided that he wants to increase the overall size of the military, and send more troops to Iraq. The Iraq war, already compared heavily to Vietnam, gets more similar by the day. Seriously is no one in the White House able to read a history book. If you have your hand in a blender, and it hurts, you don’t push more fingers in to solve the problem.

Monday Confessional

Written by The Naib

This is a fat catAnother Monday, another confession. Lets do this one in order of importance.

First up Tess. I spent the weekend with Tess. It was super cool. We exchanged gifts early, she gave me a Dune book I had lost. If you are a Dune fan of my caliber and you don’t have the second Dune book, well… lets just say Tess saved me from a lot of embarrassment. She was radiant and wonderful as always. We played with a doggy, a bunny and saw The Holiday.

If you are thinking about going to see The Holiday make sure you take someone you love a lot. I took Tess. The reason I say this is because this movie is HORRIBLE, and the only point in going to see it is to spend some time with someone you really love and make fun of the movie with them. The acting was bad, the plot was predictable, the ending was stupid. Tess was amazing, because of her I still felt like it was money well spent. I could get hit by an asteroid, or run over by a horse, but nothing will erase the fun we had poking fun at this insult of a movie.

The Problem With Christmas

Written by The Naib

Large container shipChristmas has become a strange holiday. It has changed a lot over the years, and is almost nothing like it was at its start (that being a pagan celebration of the winter solstice, and then later co-opted by the Christians). Kieth over at the Earth Blog has a very interesting article about the problem with Christmas.
