Scottish Power plans world’s biggest wave farm

ocean power delivery
Ocean Power Delivery (discussed here before) is rolling out there first test farm. At 10 million pounds and only 3MW its not going to win any prizes for economy but it is an important step in the commercialization of wave power.

Scottish Power – a takeover target for Spanish power company Iberdrola hopes to get the 10-million pound, three-megawatt wave power farm running by 2008.

Four 160-metre long “Sea Snake” wave power generators developed by Ocean Power Delivery should produce enough power for 2,000 homes, Scottish Power said in a statement.

“It will be a test of the actual devices that will be used commercially and, if successful, should help propel Scotland into the forefront of marine energy throughout the world,” Scottish Power’s renewables director, Keith Anderson, said.

“This kind of marine generator can make the best use of Scotland’s natural resources and help combat the threat of global warming in the future,” he said.(via)

  1. Oh my God !
They actually got someone to go for that foolhardy drama trip.
I’m just going top sit back and wait for the right moment to yell
    ” I told you so !!”
About 5 years ago a developer sent me their link and asked me to review it’s feasibility.
    I trashed it irrecoverably.
Those floating cigar shaped hazards are going to be nothing more than a huge headache. In a year they’ll have a healthy marine sanctuary growing on them. In two they’ll be mostly submerged from the mere weight of the growth, and in three, if they last that long, they’ll most likely break loose and cause serious damage, injury or death.
The’re going to rust apart, the rubber neoprene junctions will harden and crack from the salt, fill up and break their mooring chains and drift into the shipping lanes.
And all that for five degrees of motion between the cylinders.

My commentary on this and all other attempts at generating power from the sea is equally unkind; and with good reason.
ANY seaman knows what the ocean can do.
These designers with fancy drawing boards do NOT have a clue.

    Don’t wait for the headlines.

    My solution, O.S.M.E.G.S.

  2. mike, i actually think this will work…god created everything, and he created everything for a reason, so we should find everything possible to our advantage…
