The current economic implosion in my opinion gives us an amazing opportunity to make fundamental changes in the the way our economic, political, judicial and social systems operate like no other time since the Great Depression and World Wars. I think it is a telling bit of trivia that the stock market took a nose dive on the announcement recently that the US was in a recession since last December. That the US was in a recession did little to the US economy, it was awareness of it that was the fatal blow. So does that mean that being in a recession isn't as bad as the politicians and economists would have us believe?

Why does progress and wealth need to be obtained through unlimited and constant growth and increased consumption? It was a conscious decision in the last century to make this an economic rule or indicator and it can be undone just as consciously, Seeing recession and contraction as normal and even beneficial would go a long way to making sure that sustainable actions are supported economically and thus politically. Economic growth must be rethought if not abandoned for a more logical and organic model of balance and symbiosis, our economic beliefs as they are now drive us into behaviour that make us more akin to a virus killing it's host than a species living in harmony with nature as all others do.

Once this is achieved, and only when it is achieved, will other changes such as sustainable communities, secure food supplies, population, ending war, fair trade and social equality be possible. Money is what makes the world go round.

I guess it's just what I believe.
