It’s not as fantastical as it sounds. We’re not living in some wacky Children of Men-type scenario, and I’m pretty sure Thomas Beatie has never been to The Island. But he did used to be a woman, and as Oprah so tactfully phrased it, he still has his woman parts.

January 23rd, 2007I talked a little bit about my feelings on abortion in my last blog, but beyond really disliking children and never, ever wanting to birth one myself, I have a few real reasons for being proudly pro-choice, most of which have little to nothing to do with the actual part where I hate babies. “You’ll change your mind when you get older.” This is what people are always telling me when I state, firmly and without question, that I don’t want children. “You’ll change your mind,” they say, shaking their heads and clucking their tongues, as if somehow getting older will suddenly make me want to tie myself down to one person, grow a parasitic-like life form in my body for an excruciating nine months during which I will probably vomit a lot and have to pee every five minutes, gain weight I will probably never lose, and then actually have to birth the thing.
