Do Not Go Gently Into That Dark Night

Global warming chart

There used to be a time that when I heard news like this;

Winter in the Northern Hemisphere this year has been the warmest since records began more than 125 years ago, a US government agency says.

The combined land and ocean surface temperature from December to February was 0.72C (1.3F) above average.(via)

Or this;

Mark Serreze, a senior research scientist at CU-Boulder’s National Snow and Ice Data Center who led the study synthesizing results from recent research, said the Arctic sea-ice extent trend has been negative in every month since 1979, when concerted satellite record keeping efforts began. The team attributed the loss of ice, about 38,000 square miles annually as measured each September, to rising concentrations of greenhouse gases and strong natural variability in Arctic sea ice.

“When the ice thins to a vulnerable state, the bottom will drop out and we may quickly move into a new, seasonally ice-free state of the Arctic,” Serreze said. “I think there is some evidence that we may have reached that tipping point, and the impacts will not be confined to the Arctic region.”(via)

I used to fall into a introspective depression. Wondering how in the world we were going to solve these problems. Faced with such a massive problem it is easy to get crushed under the wave of bad news.

But we must not give up. We must rage and fight and struggle until the problem is solved. If you care about anything in this world you should be fighting mad about global warming. If I told you that someone was going to come and kill all your relatives, murder your children, destroy your home, and then kill you, you might try and do something about it right? What if I told you that there was only a 90% chance it would happen, would you shrug and go back to driving your SUV?

Anger can be a gift. It can focus the mind. Narrow things down to what is important in life and put it into a new perspective. I want a future. I want to live. I want to celebrate life, love my friends, and live on a planet that is healthy and in balance.

I for one am not going to go gently into that good night. News of oceans rising, ice caps melting, and record heat, steals my resolve further. We can solve this problem, we can save ourselves, we can live in peace with our world, and we will.

Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

  1. Perhaps it is time to accept that the planet has had it with the most viscious and stupid species it has ever produced and is getting ready to cleanse itself. The human animal doesn’t deserve to survive. We were given paradise and have turned it into hell.
